Neville Goddard was a self-proclaimed mystic who wrote dozens of era-defining books and delivered hundreds—if not thousands—of lectures, all for free. Here’s a brief overview of Neville’s technique and the method he often used and shared:
Choose a scene. Any scene that would occur after your desire has been fulfilled. Make sure you can infuse the chosen scene with sensory vividness.
Create a drowsy, sleepy state. Many wonder what this means—it’s simply a state where you feel completely relaxed, whether lying down or sitting comfortably in a chair.
Start repeating your scene in this drowsy state. Repeat it until it feels real to you. This doesn’t necessarily mean you see it as vividly as in the real world, but it should feel so real that you forget you’re imagining it. Many people claim they cannot reach this state—they simply haven’t repeated the scene long enough. If you get distracted, return to the beginning of the scene and keep repeating it.
Feel that it’s already done. Many still debate what Neville meant by “feel.” Neville often referred to “feeling” both as an emotion and as a sense of fulfillment. The best way to achieve this feeling is through an inner “knowing” that it’s done—a sense of completion. If you’ve done everything correctly, you should feel happy emotions.
Either fall asleep while repeating the scene or awaken from this drowsy state with the knowledge that it’s done.
Live your day from the moment of your desire’s fulfillment.
Repeat the technique until you feel internally convinced that your desire is already yours!
That’s it! We’re all here to help if you have any questions. Remember—stick to his technique, and you’ll succeed! Good luck and lots of love!
A Ladder Exercise
I’m going to ask you to do something to prove to me that I’m wrong and visualization doesn’t work.
I’m about to teach you right now how to climb a ladder. All you need to do to prove me wrong is to do exactly as I say. If this doesn’t work, you can call me a fraud.
First, imagine a ladder before you. Close your eyes and visualize the ladder. Then lift your imaginary left hand, touch the rung, and grab it with the side of your imaginary left hand.
Great, now lift your imaginary right hand and reach for the other side of the ladder.
Now lift your imaginary left foot and place it on the first rung. Pull yourself up and start climbing the ladder.
When you reach the top, climb down, then back up again, and down again.
That’s all you need to do, and you must do it; otherwise, none of my practices will work for you.
“I Will Not…”
You should place this instruction in a visible spot, like in your wallet. Every time you open it, you should read this statement: “I will not climb a ladder.”
You should also write this on your mirror. Every time you shave in the morning, read this phrase: “I will not climb a ladder.” You just need to do this, or everything I teach you will have zero effect.
You must fully realize and feel in your heart that you will not climb any ladders. Write this statement everywhere so it’s obvious that day or night, you won’t be climbing any ladders.
For three nights, before you fall asleep, imagine yourself climbing a ladder. The only condition is to lie in an uncomfortable position, not your usual sleeping posture. If you usually sleep on your right side, lie on your left. If you sleep on your stomach, lie on your back. If you can fall asleep in any position, sit.
Make sure not to fall asleep immediately. You need to climb the ladder until you drift off to sleep. Do this for three nights, and when you wake up in the morning, read the phrase you see every day: “I will not climb a ladder.”
But in your imagination, you will climb a ladder before bedtime for three nights straight.
